About Linux

It all started back in 1992 at the University of Helsinki in Finland where student Linus Torvalds developed the kernel for a unix clone, then published the source code. Since that day, Linux has taken off and has displaced microsoft in many instances.  There are many reasons for this, but the most important one is that it is a free, as in liberty, operating system.  That's right, free.  No restrictive, proprietary licensing to be concerned about.  No mandatory upgrades every two years. It cannot be infected by viruses, thus making it more secure than the product from Redmond. When a patch is needed, it is released as soon as it is complete.  There is no need to wait for a Service Pack.

Gnu/Linux, which is the proper name of the entire operating system, is Free and OpenSource, which means that the developers of these applications have given the user broad rights under common property licenses.  These licenses are important reasons why Linux
has become what it is.  Cooperative skill and dedication to the development of Gnu/Linux have facilitated rapid improvements, making it a world-class operating system.

There are many different distributions of Linux
, but the most popular are RedHat, SUSE/Novell, Ubuntu, Debian, Xandros and Slackware.   We encourage you to support the producers of Gnu/Linux distributions by either purchasing a boxed set or sending the company a cheque or money order for a distribution you obtain for free and elect to use.  On our downloads page, we have links to two sites that offer high bandwidth connections.

a try.  If you need help, subscribe to our mailing list and we'll do our best.  Attend local LUG meetings if you need personal assistance. We all have the same goal in mind...to make Linux a versatile and commonly used operating system.
